Comprehensive Aproach
Payten's mission as a piano teacher is to guide students to become mature, independent learners, foster a love of music, and develop life-long skills. She believes that each student has unique qualities, talents, and interests, and it is important to draw upon these in the learning environment. If students are always taught in a generic “one size fits all” sort of way, they may never feel engaged or supported. In Payten's studio, she strives to connect students to the tasks at hand. Each student will learn and relate in a different way, and it is her mission to create an environment where students feel truly involved. Payten is passionate about sharing the wonder of music with others. As a piano teacher, she has a unique opportunity to guide others in their own musical journey and explore many facets of its beauty.
Healthy Goals
No matter the student, it is important to set goals of various types. Long-term goals for students include improvement in the following areas: Physical development, musical literacy, musicianship, and artistry. This means students will show growth in their technical approach to the piano, fundamental understanding of music theory and history, listening, sight reading, and improvising skills, as well as imagination and expression in their music. In addition, it is important to foster a good relationship with students. Payten aims to encourage and build up while still offering valuable insight into their music study. Payten strives to be flexible in her teaching approaches, as each student learns differently. Payten's goal is to lead students in a healthy approach to music making, and engage them with the magical nature of the piano.
About Payten Allison
Payten Allison's first piano lessons were in China at age five. Although she didn’t speak the same language as her teacher, a curiosity began to develop. Upon moving back to Canada, Payten began regular piano lessons that have continued until today. She currently holds elementary and intermediate Piano Pedagogy certificates from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Payten is now focusing on an Associate Diploma in Piano Performance. Payten also enjoys composing and performing. Playing her own composition with an orchestra at age 12 was a highlight, and today she continues to perform at an annual benefit concert.
Teaching Philosophies
When teaching a new concept, introduce it in small steps so that it is attainable.
Teachers should have an understanding of various types of learning styles. (visual, kinesthetic, auditory, readers/writers)
As much as possible, students should understand the reason why they are doing something. This promotes student ownership.
Experimentation is a necessary and natural part of the learning process.
Teach students to strive for excellence, but not to be obsessed with perfection.
